SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 11

THE MOST STUPID AWARD OF THE YEAR AWARD

So what was the most stupid award of the year?

Was it Salford Council Leader, John Merry being awarded the CBE last June?

Was it John – I'll build a private hotel in the middle of your park – Wilkinson getting an honorary degree from the University of Salford?

No, no, no…

Ladies and Gentlemen. The winner of the MOST STUPID AWARD OF THE YEAR AWARD…goes to…

Please do a drum roll and click here…

JULIA FAWCETT - CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE LOWRY

Yes, Julie has got herself an OBE in the New Year Honours list for `services to the arts'…

Surely there must be some mistake? Didn't the Queen mean Farrah Fawcett, from Charlie's Angels who died last year?

There's got to be a mistake! This is the woman who, a couple of years ago, got a salary and bonus of over £300,000, while we Salford council tax payers were subsidising the elitist arts palace and its Chief Exec to the tune of £1million a year. This is the woman who oversaw The Lowry kicking out local kids, as demonstrated in the Salford Star's first ever issue

Services to the arts? It's not too late Mrs Queen to take the OBE back…Tell her it was all a big mistake… tell her you meant to give it to Farrah…

Quick, before the word gets out!  Mrs Queen, get it back now!!!

Ahem. Ladies and Gentlemen. Please rattle your jewellery for the winner of the MOST STUPID AWARD OF THE YEAR AWARD…

Julia Fawcett OBE (Oh Bloody 'Ell)

Mealy mouthed moron 'Lowry Worker'. Why can't we be proud of one of our own who'se done good. Julia brought up in Odsall from a very working class family, has achieved so much, pulled the Lowry out of a hole, made no redundancies, and given us an extra weeks holiday. Don't we just hate it when someone from the street makes good.

What is 'Lowry worker' on about? Even in the worst recession since the year dot all of us here are still in a job, in fact the place would have gone bust years ago without 'this woman'. Elitist dance? I'm proud that some of the world's best theatre and dance companies come to Salford rather than Manchester. Only one show has ever cost 90 quid, and Salford residents get cheap tickets on loads of shows. Grow up or go work somewhere else 'Lowry worker'!

Full agree with this article. This woman has singlehandedly been running The Lowry into the ground. £318,000.00 last year then she also got a £29,000.00 bonus in November when the rest of the staff had their pay frozen. Now she has had the idea of making The Lowry a home for elitist dance companies - does she not realise that us Salford people don't want to pay £90.00 a ticket to watch ballet!!!!

Born in Hanky Park, Margaret moved around central Salford, to Ellor Street, Warburton Street and finally to Littleton Road, as part of the slum clearances.

A proper Salford lass, Margaret worked on Lancaster Bombers during the war and as a machinist in Strangeways, and, as the family partied with residents and staff, there were a zillion anecdotes that will echo with loads of local families.

NEW OWNER CONSIDERS RESTORATION PLANS FOR LOWER BROUGHTON THEATRE

After Lower Broughton's 'at risk' Grade II listed Victoria Theatre was sold last year, there were fears that it would be pulled down for development but the Salford Victoria Theatre Trust has today announced that its new owner "has engaged with the group to seek out a way forward, even vowing to consider plans to restore it for its original purpose".

The Trust is now putting together a business plan and pitch to present to the owner at the end of the month, with a meeting planned with Salford City Council next month to discuss the theatre's future.
