SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 3

THE `LET'S BUILD A MEDIA CITY THAT NO BUGGER IN SALFORD CAN GET TO' AWARD

Yes, as the new HQ of the BBC takes shape at Salford Quays with all those promised jobs, it's absolutely essential that the millions of Salford people who are - of course - going to benefit from the move can actually get there.

So the `LET'S BUILD A MEDIA CITY THAT NO BUGGER IN SALFORD CAN GET TO' AWARD goes to…

Please do a drum roll and click here…

Where shall we start? SALFORD COUNCIL, NORTH WEST DEVELOPMENT AGENCY, SALFORD CENTRAL URBAN REGENERATION COMPANY, GMPTE, PEEL HOLDINGShave we missed anyone out?

A study by Salford City Council showed that only 30% of Salford's properties are located within a 30 minute travel time, via public transport, to the MediaCityUK development. So what do they all do to remedy the situation?

Yes, that's right - spend around £19 million on a quarter of a mile (0.4 km) extension to the Eccles Metrolink! Everyone in Salford is just so excited! A whole quarter of a mile extension to the trams that no-one who lives in Kersal or Broughton or Little Hulton or anywhere else that's not on a tramline (like everywhere apart from Eccles) can get!  Fantastic!

What's this? News has just come in that, at great expense, they're also building a pedestrian footbridge over the Manchester Ship Canal at the Quays too – so we can all get on our skateboards to work, presumably…

Ladies and Gentlemen. The `LET'S BUILD A MEDIA CITY THAT NO BUGGER IN SALFORD CAN GET TO' AWARD goes to…

SALFORD COUNCIL, NORTH WEST DEVELOPMENT AGENCY, SALFORD CENTRAL URBAN REGENERATION COMPANY, GMPTE, PEEL HOLDINGS…have we missed anyone out?

Applause…

Excellent award! Well deserved. If only the Metro could have been extended that extra bit further to the Precinct,up Langworthy road into Pendleton... but NOOOO! Not enough luxury apartments around my neck of the woods or enough multinationals running min-wage call centres around there for them to bother. I guess if I want to take the 3 mile trip to what is meant to be our "new city centre" I shall just have to keep continue to wait 30 mins for the 10 bus, sometimes having to change two or three times.. just in case I ever want to visit the "outlet" mall and smash open my piggyb bank or to visit the blue peter garden to dig up a time capsule at "media city"... or maybe there could be a special line built! no chance. Shame on you GMPTE for putting big business before the ordinary people who rely on public transport you are meant to be providing. Ooooh I just *cant wait* for the new 0.4m "extention" to open, I'll be able to get a bus in to Manchester, then a tram, then change at Victoria then at Piccadilly then about an hour and half later I may be back in Salford in time to apply for a cleaning job at the BBC. I'm bursting with excitement. Someone please find out when the media city line opening ceremony is and I will be there with bells and whistles... and a few surprises.:)

DOGS FIRST AID COURSE AFTER HUMAN GROUPS CUT

"An insult to the people of Salford..."

Salford City Council is using its Health Improvement Team to run First Aid For Dogs courses, after slashing £1.6million from its budget which helped improve the lives of humans.

The courses, run in conjunction with the PDSA, cover doggy bloat, doggy bandaging and resuscitating doggies... "It's an insult to the people of Salford that managers are putting the health of dogs before the health of people" says one resident affected by the Health Improvement cuts.
