At the Salford Arts Theatre everyone's running around making last minute changes to the props and costumes as the curtain prepares to open for the first matinee of Jack and the Beanstalk.

The dame's shaving, the freshly painted beans have arrived and the band is warming up…

"Last year we did Christmas Cat and the Pudding Pirates which was a fabulous story but this year we wanted to go down the traditional route with Jack and the Beanstalk" says Salford Art Theatre's Roni Ellis.

"We've got live music, a giant beanstalk and the dame is absolutely brilliant, a natural" she adds "The other great thing about it is that this a local and really affordable show, and Salford pubs and places get mentions. It's just really funny and I think everyone will love it."

Family tickets for two adults and three kids are just £22, making it the most affordable panto in Salford, and while most matinees have already sold out there are tickets left for the evening performances. Ring the box office for further details…925 0111 or 07770 776924

FROM HANKY PARK TO LITTLETON ROAD VIA LANCASTER BOMBERS AND THE 'MONKEY RUN'

Salford's Margaret McHale turned one hundred this week as her six children and relatives gathered for a huge party at The Broughtons Care Home. A proper Salford lass, Margaret worked on Lancaster Bombers during the war and as a machinist in Strangeways, and, as the family partied with residents and staff, there were a zillion anecdotes that will echo with loads of local families.
