MADLAB STARTS FREE DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR SALFORD PEOPLE

FROM BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS TO WEBSITE CREATION

From 17th October, MadLab is holding nine free digital skills training programmes for anyone in Salford who is unemployed or underemployed. The sessions are being held at MadLab's base on Chapel Street and cover everything from basic computer skills to to website creation and using social media like Facebook and LinkedIn.

MadLab is holding nine free digital workshops at its base in Bexley Square for anyone who is unemployed or underemployed in Salford, beginning on 17th October and running on days until 21st November.

The skills sessions cover everything from basic computer stuff to starting a website, to using social media like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to coding, to soldering together a radio kit. 

"One of MadLab's core objectives is to ensure that everyone has access to Digital Skills Training, without facing barriers such as cost or location" explains MadLab's Claire Dodd "Our most recent initiative is targeting residents of Salford through the provision of free to attend workshops with the Salford Third Sector Learning Consortium.

"Whether you're in work and looking to enhance your digital skills, or unemployed and seeking new opportunities, MadLab's Digital Skills workshops are a great place to start" she adds "These courses range from basic IT skills and setting up social media accounts, to web development, programming and electronics. There's also a series of three WordPress courses that will help you go from complete beginner to running your first website and blog."

All workshops are free to attend for anyone who is unemployed or underemployed, and a resident of Salford. To book a free `bursary' place just email office@madlab.org.uk *

17th October 10am-3pm Basic Computer Skills...
Setup a Google account, including email, and learn how to write documents, use spreadsheets and find information on the internet. Suitable for complete beginners.

19th October 10am-3pm Social Media...
Find out how to use Facebook, Twitter and social media for networking, communication and job searches, and create your own LinkedIn account. Suitable for beginners, although attending the Basic Computer Skills course is recommended if not au fait with the internet and computer.

31st October 10am-3pm Setting up a WordPress website...
Creating a first website using WordPress. Suitable for beginners, although attending the Basic Computer Skills course is recommended if not confident using a computer or the internet.

2nd November 10am-3pm Programming 101...
A whistle-stop tour of everything programming languages can do. A practical session using Python. Suitable for beginners, although attending the Basic Computer Skills course is recommended if not au fait with the internet and computer.

7th November 10am-3pm Intro to Arduino...
Learn to code and make interactive projects using an Arduino. Suitable for beginners, although attending the Basic Computer Skills course is recommended if not au fait with the internet and computer.


9th November 10am-3pm Making the most of WordPress...
Handy tips on how to make the most of a website, creating menus, using widgets and playing with themes. Must have completed the 'Setting up your first website with WordPress' course, or have a WordPress website with basic content prepared.


14th November 10am-3pm Intro to Web Development... 
Learn how to make a simple three-page website using HTML and CSS, the building blocks of the web. Suitable for beginners, although attending the Basic Computer Skills course is recommended if not au fait with the internet and computer.

16th November 10am-3pm Learn to Solder...
Hands-on soldering to make a radio kit with fifty parts. Suitable for complete beginners.

21st November 10am-3pm Blogging 101...
Learn how to create engaging content for readers of a website.

*For all other bookings, MadLab requests a £3 refundable booking fee. On completion of the course this fee will be refunded, or alternatively, you can leave your fee as a donation to the provider to help cover the cost of a place for an unemployed person.

NIGEL PIVARO CONCLUDES SALFORD STAR FUNDRAISING WITH SALFORD PRECINCT AUCTION

After two auctions, two exhibitions and a pop-up shop over just ten days, the immediate future of the Salford Star has been saved, with around £3,000 raised by the community.

At Salford Shopping Centre yesterday, over £1,000 was raised as actor and long time Salford Star contributor, Nigel Pivaro conducted an auction of Salford relics and memorabilia... "This isn't just about raising money for the Salford Star" said Nigel "It's also symbolic in terms of raising awareness of what we've done over the years...shining the torch where councils, developers and companies don't like it shone..."
